EPI-LASIK (E-LASIK) PROCEDURE IN SAN DIEGO

A flapless, proven alternative to LASIK

What is Epi-LASIK?

Epi-LASIK (E-LASIK) is a type of refractive surgery that can correct nearsightedness. It is the only genuine flapless LASIK procedure in the world. With Epi-LASIK, the flap is not made using the corneal bed but only the epithelium. This procedure is a much more advanced version of PRK primarily used in specialized circumstances.

Also called ‘surface ablation,’ Epi-LASIK surgery doesn’t use alcohol, which helps protect the cells in the epithelial flap. Epi-LASIK surgeons use an oscillating blade that is much duller than the sharp blades used in LASEK. The oscillating blade gives surgeons more control and significantly reduces room for error. Dr. Motwani is one of the very few surgeons with the skill and technology to perform this procedure. Over the years, he has discovered the benefits of using this with very high corrections with thinner corneas. Qualifying patients do not have enough corneal tissue to do corrections with LASIK or thin flap LASIK. Often, their doctors have told them they are not good candidates for LASIK or other laser vision corrections.

Who Should Consider Epi-LASIK?

Undergoing an Epi-LASIK surgery in San Diego is the safest option for certain patients. If you identify with any of the following conditions, you could be a candidate:

  • Patients with thin corneas or irregularly shaped corneas
  • Patients susceptible to extreme trauma (i.e., athletes, police officers, firefighters)
  • Combat soldiers in the military
  • Patients with types of corneal dystrophies
  • Patients with large pupils
  • Patients who have had eye operations (LASIK, radial keratotomy, retinal detachment repair, or glaucoma surgery)
  • Anyone who wants to avoid a LASIK flap

Dr. Motwani’s Epi-LASIK Results

With Epi-LASIK eye surgery, it is possible to do such operations safely and with excellent results. In one case, Dr. Motwani corrected another San Diego physician’s vision for very high amounts of nearsightedness.

The doctor had 11 diopters of myopia, 1.50 diopters of astigmatism, and a cornea lacking enough tissue to correct with standard Lasik procedures. With the Epi-Lasik approach, Dr. Motwani achieved 20/20 vision in the physician’s eyes.
